Opening a Croatian bank account without a wasted trip

A passport, OIB and the right residence information are a useful start. An online rejection may reflect a document requirement for that channel rather than every account option.

You need an account for everyday payments, but the application asks for documents in unfamiliar categories. Before taking time off work for a branch visit, ask the bank which account and application route fit your documents.

PBZ’s EUR giro-account page gives one concrete example: a foreign applicant is asked for a valid passport or qualifying ID and evidence of Croatian permanent or temporary residence. Zaba’s nonresident centre explicitly asks for OIB. These are product and customer-category instructions; nationality alone does not decide which residence category a bank uses. [1][2]

Erste lists identity, address, OIB, permit validity, tax residence, account purpose and source of funds among the customer information it collects. Bring requested employment or salary evidence where applicable, and keep names and addresses consistent across documents. This is part of customer due diligence, often called KYC. [3][5]

Digital opening can have a narrower route. PBZ’s listed online conditions require a qualifying Croatian ID issued after August 1, 2021, Croatian residence and a Croatian mobile number. A Nepali passport alone does not meet that route; a branch enquiry remains a separate option. [4]

Consumers legally resident in the EU may apply for an osnovni račun, or basic account, under the applicable legal conditions. Anti-money-laundering requirements and restrictions concerning an existing suitable account still matter. If refused, ask about the written reason and complaint route. [6][7]

Finally, compare the fee document: maintenance, digital banking, cash withdrawals and international transfers can be priced separately. Getting the account open and choosing an affordable package are connected but different decisions.
