Flying home with a Croatian residence permit? Understand the EES distinction

The border system covers specified non-EU short stays. A resident’s documents and a visiting relative’s documents can place them in different categories.

Two Nepali travellers can arrive at the same border with different rules applying to them. One may hold a Croatian residence permit; the other may be visiting family for a short stay. Nationality alone does not answer the EES question.

The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System became fully operational on April 10, 2026. For the short-stay travellers it covers, electronic records of entry, exit and biometric information replace passport stamping. [1]

Croatia’s Interior Ministry lists residence-card, residence-permit and long-stay-visa holders among the categories exempt from EES registration. Its FAQ also says biometric collection has no fee. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection, not from the facial image. [2]

For a home visit, check the documents for the return journey as carefully as the outward ticket. Your valid passport, residence document and the category of travel are the useful starting points. An EES exemption does not by itself resolve every other entry requirement or a problem with an expired document.

There is no basis in these sources to promise that every airport will be quick or to claim every traveller will face a delay. This guide explains the system and the official categories; the competent authority can answer a question about a particular document. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing your plans with a relative travelling as a visitor.
