The government set new maximum retail prices for fuel on Monday, valid for seven days from Tuesday, 13 October. Gas for bottles (UNP za boce, the propane-butane mix many people use for cooking or heating) rises by 12 cents to €2.25 a kilo, and gas for large tanks also rises by 12 cents, to €1.67 a kilo. Diesel falls by one cent to €1.83 a litre. Petrol stays at €1.74 a litre and blue diesel, used by farmers and fishers, at €1.38.[1][2][3]
What it means in practice: these are maximum prices, so a station or shop cannot charge more, but it may charge less.[1] Our own example: 10 kg of bottled gas at the maximum price now costs €22.50, which is €1.20 more than last week. Filling a 50-litre diesel tank costs 50 cents less.
The government has been setting fuel prices this way every week, with the new prices usually starting on a Tuesday.[1][4] It also keeps traders' margins and excise duty at reduced levels. Without these measures, the Ministry of Economy says, petrol would cost €1.95 a litre, diesel €2.13 and bottled gas €2.49 a kilo.[1][2]
What to do: if you cook or heat with a gas bottle, check the price on the receipt against the €2.25-a-kilo cap. Keep the bottle upright, in a ventilated place, and never use a gas heater meant for outdoors inside a room. If you drive for work, the next price decision is expected next Monday.
