The Croatian government set new maximum fuel prices on Monday 2 November. They apply from Tuesday 3 November for seven days, until 9 November.

The new caps: Eurosuper 95 petrol 1.69 euro a litre (no change), Eurodiesel 1.89 (up 1 cent), blue diesel for farming and fishing 1.45 (up 1 cent).

The biggest rise is gas. LPG for tanks goes from 1.77 to 1.87 euro a kilo, and gas for bottles is 2.45 euro a kilo, 10 cents more. If you cook or heat with a gas bottle, this is the one to watch.

The government says that without its price rules petrol would be 1.84 and diesel 2.20 euro a litre. So the cap saves a diesel driver about 31 cents a litre, roughly 15 euro on a 50-litre tank.

Careful: the caps do not apply on motorway stations, where fuel is dearer. Prices are maximums, so some stations sell for less. The rules are reset every Monday.

What to do: fill up in a town, not on the motorway, and compare stations on an app before long trips. Do you drive to work or share a car? Tell us. See also winter heating costs for renters and last month's fuel update.
